Sustainable Futures
It doesn't end with the finished product. Our members follow strict rules and best practices when it comes to managing plant waste, effluent and energy usage. We also play a direct role in recycling used milk containers. In 2006, the Council partnered with Encorp Pacific (Canada) to support a province-wide milk container recycling program. Visit the Milk Container Recycling Program page for a description of the program and its annual reports to the Ministry of Environment.

In 2011 the Ministry of Environment added Packaging and Printed Paper to its Recycling Regulation. As a result of this change, effective May 2014 all dairy product packaging, from milk containers to butter wraps, will be collected for recycling through a province-wide multi-material program operated by Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC). For more information on the program and its application to dairy product packaging, visit the MMBC web site at www.multimaterialbc.ca.
Milk Container Recycling Program
Launched in 2006, the Milk Container Recycling Program enables British Columbians to take used milk containers to more than 165 Return-It™ depots throughout the province for recycling.
The program is designed to supplement existing curbside recycling programs. Today, the combination of curbside collection and depot collection enables British Columbia to recycle over 80% of its used plastic milk jugs by weight. The depot program also enables the province to recycle over 16% of its used milk cartons, a dramatic increase from virtually zero at the program's inception, and a number that is growing steadily every year.
